At the end of the 2nd world war in 1945, the US experienced not only a post-war economic boom but also ″The Baby Boom″. Nearly 76 million babies were born in America between 1945 and 1957.

Pop Art was first coined in Britain in 1955, but the Americans, with its ″Baby Boomers″, took up the consumerist cause with much greater effect and conviction, and became the pioneers of the movement.

Pop Art comes from and is inspired by the people, places, things and events happening in popular culture. As such, it can be found in the different forms of mass media: packaging, television, advertisements, comic books, etc.

The purpose of Pop Art was to challenge tradition. It attempted to break down the barriers between high art and contemporary culture. It believes in the concept that there is no hierarchy of culture and that art may borrow from any source.

Pop Art′s colors don′t reflect the artists′ inner sensation of the world. Instead, there colors refer to the popular culture.

The predominant colors used in Pop Art are yellow, red and blue. The colors used were vivid..

It employed images of popular culture, emphasizing ordinary elements of any culture, usually through the use of irony.

Utilizing commercial art techniques made it easy for pop artists to mass-produce.

Material is sometimes visually removed from its known context, isolated or combined with unrelated material.

Wes Wilson

He was one of the best-known designers of psychedelic posters. He is known for inventing and popularizing a psychedelic font around 1966 that made the letters lkook like they were moving or melting.

Roy Lichtenstein

He developed a style using bold colors, black outlines, and tones rendered by ben-day dots. These were the methods of printing tones in comic books during the 1950′s and the 1960′ss.

Andy Warhol

He became the most famous American pop artist when he used silkscreen to paint commercial objects such as Campbell′ss soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles and for portraying major celebrities like Marilyn Monroe.

The peace sign

Designed in 1958 by Gerard Holtom direct action committee against nuclear war. It came to the US in 1960.

The ″sV″s hand signsign

Used during world war II as a symbol for victory. Adopted in 60s and 70s as a symbol for victory, freedom and peace.

The smiley face

Designed in 1963 by Harvey Richard Ball to ease the tensions caused by a merger. In September 1970, Murray and Bernard Spain wanted to create a peace symbol that had mass appeal. The smiley button was born.

Pop Art critics, mostly art authorities of the 60′ss and 70′ss, think that Andy Warhol′ss works were &pPrime;sboringly unoriginal″s and ″scommercial″s. Their greatest objection is coming from pop artists′s lack of pedigree and training. That doesn′st seem to be stopping the popularity of Pop Art though.

Today, Pop Art is everywhere, in all forms of mass media and now even in the social media. Logos, banners, posters, graphic icons, you name it. Pop Art is widely used not just because it can be mass produced and reproduced digitally and in print, but also because it is easily ″sconsumed″s by the public.

Game of Thrones Characters in Pop Art

As you probably know it, the new season of Game of Thrones started a few weeks ago and fans are waiting each Sunday with excitement. If you don’t know the show or the books the show is based on yet, it is a clever adaptation of the books ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ written by George R. R. Martin for HBO. One of the main assets of the show is its great number of very different characters. That’s why, this week, we decided to pay a tribute to those amazing characters in our way on PopArta.

As Game of Thrones has so many characters, we could only feature a few. The style used is the Graphic style we offer in our shop and inspired from the official Games of Thrones posters.

First we decided to feature some of the most popular characters: first, here is the one called Khaleesi, the last of her kind : Daenerys Targaryen. Daenerys is still trying to make her way to King’s Landing to reclaim the Iron Throne. Her long light blond hair is very unique and typical of her family. She is quite the beauty and many of her knights can’t help but being attracted to her.

One of the most in love ones is Ser Jorah Mormont, although he committed a crime and ended up exiled, he is trying to redeem himself by protecting the young Targaryen. He has been by her side since the very beginning and no doubt that he will be there until the end!

Without any doubt, the most beloved character of the show is surprisingly not the most beautiful nor sexy but he is probably one of the only sane and quite nice people in King’s Landing. Yes you guessed right, it is Tyrion. Brother of Jaime and Cersei Lannister and son of Tywin, Tyrion is not very appreciated by the other characters in the show and troubles keep coming his way but let’s hope he makes it though the next season!

And then finally, she appeared in season 2 and is quickly becoming more and more important, she might even be the next Queen: it is Margaery Tyrell! Margaery is also quite the beauty but beware she’s got thorns!

How To Properly Position Your Picture

Classic pop art canvas

Your beautiful piece of pop art is only going to look good if it’s properly positioned on the wall. So how do you get it in the right spot?  You don’t want to have a collection of holes in your walls from repeated efforts to get the positioning right, so use one of the following methods.

Method #1

You might want to recruit another person to help you with this. One of you should hold the picture against the wall while the other directs, indicating whether the picture should be higher or lower, or more to one side or the other. Remember that the best height for a picture is at eye level. When the positioning is satisfactory, the person not holding the picture should draw a small pencil mark on the wall that indicates where the top of the picture should be. Small marks can also be made on the sides.

Now, with the picture down, attach a measuring tap to the picture wire, or the hook, or whatever is going to be on the top of the nail that’s going to hold the picture in place. Measure from the top of the wire, pulling it taut, to the top of the picture. Then measure down from where you placed the pencil mark, using the same distance. Mark the spot. That’s where you drive the nail.

Method #2

Make a tool for hanging your picture. All you need is a wire clothes hanger and a pair of pliers. Cut a piece of the clothes hanger a foot to fourteen inches long. Measure in about four inches from the end of the wire, and bend the wire downward at a right angle to make a handle. Ben the wire on the other end in the opposite direction, forming an inch-long leg. Snip the end of the leg at a sharp angle, making a point.

Now, hook the pointed end of the tool under the picture wire, and using the wire handle, hold the picture in the proper position. Use your hand to press on the picture, causing the pointed wire to pierce the wall. That shows you exactly where to drive the nail.

Hanging Your Picture

Now you’re ready to hang your picture. You’ll want to make sure it’s level, but of course you probably know from past experience that pictures don’t always stay level – you always end up having to straighten them.

There’s actually a way to make sure that your pictures stay straight. Just get some peel-and-stick rubber bumpers from the hardware store, and put one on each corner of the frame. They’ll keep your pictures nice and level.

Enjoy your beautifully-hung art!

How to Create a Professional-Looking Self Portrait

You love pop art, and you can’t think of anything better than seeing your own image, or that of a loved one, transferred to a stunning pop art print. You just need to work on getting the perfect image that will rival Andy Warhol’s print of Marilyn Monroe. Composition is the key. Here are a few tips to help you create just the right shot.

Play With Settings

Remember that a flash can cause you to look washed out or blurry. However, you should also keep in mind that if you’re using incandescent light, and you don’t use the flash, your photo can come out looking blue-ish. You can always experiment with different settings on your camera that will adjust the tint depending on what kind of light you’re shooting in. There are all sorts of different options on most cameras, so feel free to use them until you find which works best for the effect that you’re trying to create.

Make the Best Use of Lighting

Proper lighting can make all the difference in the world. Often, professional photographers will use indirect lighting instead of having the light shine directly on their subject. You can shine light onto an umbrella or a wall. If you’re shooting in natural light, you can even place a big piece of white poster-board in front of yourself – this directs the sunlight toward you.

Experiment With Makeup

Where would we be without makeup? It’s what we use to emphasize our best features. Sultry, smoky eyes can really add punch to what might otherwise be an ordinary-looking portrait. If you have a beautiful mouth, why not show it off with bright red lipstick? Even if you’re a guy, there are little tricks you could use – a bit of bronzer to warm up a pale complexion, perhaps? Remember, though, that often the camera will over-emphasize makeup, and you don’t want to look clownish.

Photoshop is Your Friend

Anyone can enhance an image using Photoshop. First, open the image in Photoshop. Then go to the Image menu, and under “adjustments,” you’ll find “levels.” Just clicking on the “auto” button can give you instant correction and improvement. You can also adjust contrast and brightness in Photoshop, but be careful – too much and you can end up with an unnatural look.

If you’re a real whiz in Photoshop, you can even smooth out your skin tone, eliminate flaws, and create any number of custom effects.

Now, grab that camera and get to work. You’ll have a perfect photo of yourself in no time!

Decorating a Modern Home with Pop Art Photos

“Pop art is a modern art movement, started in the 1950s, which uses the imagery, styles, and themes of advertising, mass media and pop culture.” (About Painting) Likely, you even know the names of some of the famous artists of this genre, like Roy Lichtenstein or Andy Warhol to name a couple.

This type of work is considered to be very modern, colorful, and fun. If you are decorating your home and you prefer modern styles or even 1960’s retro furnishings, a great way to color the walls is through this kind of work.

Making it Personal

Of course, when you get started, you have a couple of different choices. One of these is to go to the store and purchase reproductions of pop art created by famous artists or new styles of pop art. This can be a workable option since you can pick from a variety of colors and perhaps even whimsical designs.

However, you will not be personally attached to that image. It will just be something you put on the wall. What if you could choose pop art that will stand out and will offer you something with a personal attachment?

This is why you need to consider having one of your own pictures turned into pop art for your walls. This way, you will get to enjoy the best of both worlds: an image you love turned into a fun and bright picture.

What Makes Good Pop Art?

Now that you know you can turn your own pictures into pop art, you are probably wondering just exactly what picture to use. Since this is such a creative genre, the sky truly is the limit. You can think outside of the box and come up with neat and unique pictures. However, a few guidelines that will help you make the perfect decisions include the following:

  • Close ups always look best. Just take a look at Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe to see how this works. Something that is a head and shoulders shot or extreme close up will look the best.
  • Only use pictures with living subjects, like people or animals. Yes, pets can make fun pop art as well.
  • Pictures that show personality will work the best. You need something that shows off who you are or who the subjects are, so don’t pick something that is boring, formal, and posed.

Now that you have a few guidelines in front of you, you can start going through your pictures and finding the right one. Again, make sure you are being creative and choose a photo that you really love. It is always ok to break the guidelines if there is something you really like about a certain image because you need to love the art you put on the wall for many years.

Choosing the Final Picture

There are some technical details you need to keep in mind before sending in your photo to a company to be turned into pop art. Make sure you choose an image that is high resolution. Even in this media, you need to ensure the picture won’t be pixilated or blurry. Additionally, always make sure the picture you choose is sharp and in-focus. The better the picture is to begin with, the better your pop art wall portrait will turn out to be.

If you are decorating a modern or retro modern styled home, then you do want to consider comics pop art for your walls. It will be attractive, fun, and colorful. It will certainly add that finishing touch to a room. Just make sure you pick a picture you love instead of choosing something generic at the store.

Can You Update Your Home with Pop Art Pictures?

If you are looking for a new way to decorate your home, then you may need to consider something bold, bright, and different like pop art. You can turn your favorite photos into pop art to add a personal touch to your décor.

“Bold, brightly-colored, graphic, tongue-in-cheek…Pop art is all about having fun with your décor.” This is a great way to completely mix things up, especially if you have been living with traditional furniture and décor. The splashes of color, unique designs, and fun imagery will definitely turn your home into a totally different style. Pop art can infiltrate everything including the furnishings themselves, but more than that, it can enhance your walls.

There are essentially two different ways to add pop art wall décor: something generic or something personal. By personal, this means you could choose to update your home with pop art portraits made from your very own pictures, including images of you, your family, or your pets. This can be a fun way to avoid something plain or generic on the walls. When people see your décor, they will be amazed if they see a great family pop art canvas.

How to Use Pop Art Wall Décor

Pop art doesn’t belong in every room, obviously. That means when you start decorating the space, you do need to consider which rooms and what décor will work best with this style. Some of your options include a family room or home theater, a bedroom, the kid’s room, or a den. It probably will not fit in the décor for a formal living room, dining room, or kitchen.

When you have your pictures printed as pop art, you do have to think about how to incorporate it into the room of your choosing. This will be a bold, bright, and colorful picture, so you need to make sure it doesn’t overwhelm the space.

Additionally, it should be used along with sparing colors in other areas of the room. Otherwise, everything can become too overwhelming. Think of this type of décor as the splash of color. It can be used along with other splashes of color throughout the space to create one cohesive look. However, it would not be ideal to put a brightly colored piece of pop art on a bright red wall. This will be just too hard on the eyes.

Considering the Best Furnishings

Pop art is not the type of style you can put with just any furniture. It won’t look right. If you choose this style of wall décor, then the rest of the room should be in keeping with the same look. A few tips on making this happen include:

  • Minimalism is key. You need to include basic walls and modern colors, like white or black.
  • Retro furniture from the 1950s or 1960s will work very well with this style of art.
  • Choose a color block rug with the same colors found in the artwork itself.
  • Avoid anything too traditional in the same room.

When you turn your photos into pop art, you will certainly find a variety of different style inspirations. It can even work as a jumping off point for decorating the rest of the room.

Pop art is fun, bright, unique, and colorful. It can be very interesting to add in your home. However, that doesn’t mean you should just go purchase some reproduction in the store. Instead, consider the option to turn one of your own pictures into this style of wall décor. Then, you can decorate the rest of your room to match and you will have a whole new look for the space.

Your Questions about Pop Art Pictures

So many people have seen a piece of pop art, and they love the way it looks, but they aren’t exactly sure of what they are looking at. You may have seen a picture or two done by Andy Warhol, but do you know what style this artwork actually is? It’s called pop art, and it can be a bright and fun way to liven up a room. You can even take pictures that you have of your family, friends, or pets and turn those images into pop artwork. However, before you can get started with a style you don’t know much about, you will need to get some questions answered.

What Is Pop Art?

According to the décor website, Infurn, “Started in the 1950s and 1960s primarily in America and Britain. Pop Art was young, fun and hostile to the artistic establishment, it presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular culture such as advertising or news.”

Essentially, the artists during this phase used inspiration from a variety of different pop culture sources, from advertisements to soup can labels. The colors are always bold and vibrant. The style is unique, fun, and kitschy. Ideally suited for matching with retro or modern and minimalistic furnishings, this artwork is a great way to create a conversation piece.

Where Do I Buy Pop Art?

If you want something generic, you can purchase posters or prints at almost any store that offers home décor. However, generic can be just plain boring. If you want something more personalized, then consider having your own pictures turned into pop art.

You can do this with almost any type of picture. It can be a fun way to add a personal touch to a room when you design something with your child, your whole family, you and a significant other, or your favorite pets. In any case, you will want to be as creative as possible and choose a picture that you will truly love to have on the wall.

How Do I Find a Place to Print My Pictures?

You will want to choose this very carefully. There are different printers out there and you can find them for inordinately low prices. The only problem with this is that you may end up with subpar work. It is better to choose from a quality printing company that has a good reputation. You also should consider choosing a company that offers a variety of different options so that you can personalize your pop art print even further.

Do My Pictures Need to Be Saved in a Certain Way?

It is important that you ensure the picture you choose is of high resolution.

That way, it will translate well if it is blown up into a larger image. Anything below 300 dots per inch (DPI) will not work well. Just make sure you keep your camera on the highest resolution possible when you take pictures and always save the images as a large file. Your picture will most likely need to be saved as a .jpeg or a .tiff. Usually, printers will need to use one of these file types.

Now that you have more answers about pop art wall décor that will look amazing in your home, you can get started choosing a picture to create your new art. Just take the time to pick a picture that you will love for many years to come and use your bright new décor to design the rest of the room. Make sure you choose the best place to print your pictures well for the best results.

Stop Depending on Automatic Filters for Photos

It was specifically designed to allow people to share photos with their friends, relatives and even complete strangers.

The Popularity of the Automatic Filter
